Vejer de la Frontera is one of the most beautiful and famous white towns of Andalusia. It has recently been granted the accolade of being named one of the 20 most beautiful towns in the whole of Spain. Up in the hills just behind El Palmar, Vejer is a ‘must visit’ town. Centrally located, between, Cadiz, Conil de la Frontera, Medina Sidonia and Barbate; Vejer is the perfect place for a day trip or to stay.
In 1976, the historic city centre was declared a Historic-Artistic site, and it well deserves the title. Built within and around a 15th century defense wall, the narrow, cobbled streets wind their way through beautiful Islamic style buildings and Spanish churches. Twinned with the Northern African town of Xaouen, another jewel of ancient islamic architecture, the two towns are linked by history and legend.
This town is beautiful and needs to be experienced by everyone. You simply must see the Medieval castle, the city walls, the Jewish Quarter, the Segur Arch and the churches of Divine Salvador and the Shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Oliva.
Not only does the town offer the most extraordinary variety of historical delights, but virtually every white-walled street is dotted with bars and restaurants offering every taste a chance to eat well and enjoy. Vejer is fortunate enough to be supplied by the local fishermen of Barbate, the farmland of Conil and the Retinto beef of the surrounding countryside. Virtually anywhere, you will find lovely "tapas" bars and restaurants, each with their own flavor to tempt you. Worth visiting, for excellence of cuisine, is the Plaza de España and the Corredera Street, both of which not only offer the most glorious surroundings, but a huge choice of places to eat and relax.
Thanks to the Local Department of Culture and Festivities, during the summer months, Vejer is home to a plethora of fantastic organized shows and entertainment. There are Jazz festivals and concerts, flamenco shows, art exhibitions, Andalusian and artisanal markets. The beauty of the town, the excellence of the restaurants and the variety of entertainment all make Vejer de la Frontera one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area.
