ZAHARA DE LOS ATUNES

The once small fishing village of Zahara has been reinvented as one of the major tourist destinations in Spain. With nearly 2km of water frontage and a focus on gastronomy (thanks to the Almadraba tuna and Retinto beef) Zahara has grown into a remarkable and wonderful holiday destination with something for absolutely everybody. Nature, beaches, water sports, night life, restaurants and bars, wonderful accommodation, shops, markets, entertainment - everything you could wish for in a holiday.

Built by the Dukes of Medina Sidonia in the 16th Century, the ancient walls of the old Palace and defense against the Turkish-Berber pirates, still dominate the old town centre. Here, too, is where the tuna have been cut treated and salted, ready for transportation and consumption for hundreds of years.

Within the walls during the summer months, you will find artisanal craft markets, local produce, street bars, live music, children’s workshops and attractions and much more. This, together with all the other bars and restaurants in the area, really put Zahara on the map for cuisine; a place where local, fresh ingredients are essential.

Its infinite variety of activities, both on and off the water, make Zahara the perfect holiday destination. As well as everything we think of for a sunny holiday, Zahara offers archeological hiking routes through caves with their original cave-art, magnificent walks around the Sierra de la Plata or a ferry crossing to the African continent from the nearby town of Tarifa. Put all of this together with horse riding at sunset and diving in the clearest water imaginable and you can see how much Zahara has to offer.

Because of its privileged location, Zahara benefits from the wonderful Mediterranean climate whilst enjoying sea breezes and comfortable temperate conditions for most of the year.
